2009 Women's Varsity

Oxford 37 - 17 Cambridge

On the 16th of May, a newly formed Cambridge team travelled to Oxford faced with the daunting task of taking the varsity trophy from a team undefeated in five national championships and ten varsity matches.

Cambridge started strongly - a less sporting side might've been tempted to claim victory and run at 5-4 up, but the light blues chose to push on. Unfortunately the dark army pushed back - Cambridge's talent, charm and plucky-underdog spirit not quite enough to withstand Oxford's 'triweekly' (how often is that?) training sessions, professional coaching, and suspected cybernetic enhancements.

So the result might not have been a complete surprise but every Cambridge player contributed to a decent final tally of 17 frames, against any other team such a performance might've been enough. Just as importantly though all accounts suggest that a good weekend was had by all, and I'm optimistic that next year will prove to be twelfth time lucky for the Cambridge girls.
