Novices' Tournament 2008
September 24, 2008 05:54PM
The annual novices' tournament will be held shortly, with a provisional date of Sunday, October 12th. Anyone who has never played for Cambridge in varsity and never played in the CUPC Masters tournament is eligible to enter. Other than that, people of all standards and experience levels are welcome.

As usual there will be a group stage and a knockout stage with everyone guaranteed at least three matches. We'll also try to get a few experienced players involved in the group stage only.

If you're interested or have any questions please post below. There's no commitment at this stage but we'd like to get an idea of numbers.

I played in the C team in BUSA last year but I assume I'm still eligible to play based on the requirements above. If that is the case then I'll definitely take part

Yeah you're eligible Laurence, thanks for signing up.

An important part of the event from our perspective is that we get to see first hand the standard of players we don't really know, and that includes most of the CAPL/BUSA B+C squads, as well as college pool veterans and of course freshers. So yeah you're very welcome.

So far I've heard from:

Steve Dickinson
Vin Shen Ban
Kunal Guha
Jon Nelson
Laurence Shaw
Tim Henshaw
Josh Cadney

Uni players:
Me
Paul Thomas

Cheers everyone.

I just sent some extra details out by email - here they are:

Play will start at noon and we expect to have a winner by 6pm, the draw will be made at 11:45 so everyone needs to be there by then. If you're running late on the day or know now that you won't be able to make that time please let me know and we'll try to fit you in - otherwise we'll have to assume you're not coming. My mobile is 07800530982.

The venue is a little way out of town, so if you've never been before I suggest meeting me at the St. Andrew's street taxi rank (between Lion Yard and Christ's) at 11:15.

Entry will be £3, taken on the day. I hope this won't put anyone off, we've tried to keep it as low as possible. All money will go into table costs with anything left over going into a prize pot.

It's all over! Congrats to Relja on becoming Novices' champion. Special mention also to Chris who was playing under world rules for the first time and came very close to winning the event. Full results are here.

Thanks to everyone who came - the turnout was excellent. The overall standard was good too and we've come away with a list of people who could strengthen the university teams this year.

Cheers, and I hope to see many of you at the CU Open later this term smileys with beer
